why does emotional wreckage haunt us?\n(i'm always at least a little bit lost.)\n\nwe move so fast but do we go anywhere?\nor are we like trees, rooted in our lives.\n\ntwo seeds encompassing separate\nuniverses of potential become\ntwo trees in separate universes,\n\nboth uncomplaining subjects of\ntheir places in the world, of\ntheir microclimates, of shade,\nsun, elevation, weather,\ncompetition for water.\n\nthey don't get to choose where\nand when damp soil awakens\nthem any more than apes decide\nwhere and when to be born\nand into what precarious\nsocial networks.\n\nit's the agony of choice that defeats us\nmoment by moment, the mistaken belief\nthat no roots bind us, that no walls block\nout the warmth, that the open sky alone\ndetermines where our reach meets its\nlimitations.\n\ntrees feel no grief, no loneliness, no despair.\nthey endure. they live, they grow, they die.\nthey fall, they sift into soil, decay.\n\nor are we discrete organisms at all?\nor are we only entries in a bestiary\n\nmanufactured by the neural pathways\nleft behind by natural selection, by\nthose primitive shapes that fell one\ninto the other, by those coincidental\nkeys that opened coincidental locks,\nthose streams of particles flowing\nthrough the skulls of self-considering\napes, electrical entities that can't see\nbackwards into space or time, only\ninwards, the master originators who\ndeclare this pool of signals suffering<\/em>,\nenfolding it within a length of\njudgement,\n\nthis is wrong, a sin, a fault<\/em>, or\nthis shall be excused, ignored,\nelevated into grace.<\/em>\n\ntrees make no such distinctions.\nfill in the spaces between the\nbranches and the tree becomes\nnegative.\n\nwhatever we are, we exist, we need.\none moment of joy, one moment of\ngrief. we pass along the dendritic\nstream into an unreachable sky.\n\n(suffering dislodged from its context\nis never senseless.)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
